Piccolino - Quakers Friars - Bristol

I had been told this restaurant was good and it sure was!

With amazing green decor and low lighting, Piccolino's was a real treat to sit in, it felt very trendy but not too much so you felt uncomfortable and it was very warm with lovely smells coming from the open kitchen.

When seated I think we were served by 3 different people which was fine as everyone seemed to have a role, man for drinks, waitress, front of house, everything ran very smoothly.

The menu is not that large but it was so hard to choose our dishes, I settled on Pollo Valdostana. Breaded & filled chicken, fontina cheese, ham & peperonata and Andy had Vitello alla Milanese. Pan fried, breaded veal escalope, spaghetti, tomato & basil.  Both dishes were amazing! mine was so creamy, crispy and salty but was balanced perfectly by sweet peppers,  Andy's was fresh tangy crispy and well seasoned and i must say both portions were HUGE!!

I was very surprised and very pleased with the quality and value, although 2 of the most expensive items on the menu the size and taste was worth it and we didn't feel ripped off!

There was no room for pudding sadly which sounded nice but I will defiantly be going back!

one not to miss!

Brasserie Blanc - Quakers Friars - Bristol

Its always nice when you go somewhere for dinner that's not 100% to your liking and you don't have to pay, which is exactly what happened when I went to Brassier Blanc with my work colleagues.

The venue itself is stunning, very warm and inviting, the staff were very nice too and showed very attentive service considering there was 10 of us!

Now the food...well they do offer a quite good value set menu but the choices are very limited and are obviously cheaper products, one party had the fish cakes and the pear pudding both were apparently nice but the portion sizes were very small and i mean very...1 fish cake and some creamed leeks for a main course :(

I however went for the main menu as I fancied the mussel's and chips, in fact most of the party went for the larger menu and their portions were not any bigger, in fact laughable for the average price was about £15 per dish.

The taste of my mussel's were good though, they were well cooked and cleaned but to be honest I was not blown away.

We had plenty of room for pudding and I ordered the treacle sponge and ice cream.  I wish I had taken a picture to convey how small it was, the scoop of ice cream was tea spoon sized and the sponge not much bigger!  It was however nice but again did not blow me away.

I felt quite bad for my boss after the evening having to pay for the meal but sadly you do have a bad one, well not bad just small and very average!!!

Jamie's Itallian - Bath

I know it says Bath but we were in Bath and Jamie's was on my list and I presume its the same in Bristol too!!

The place was heaving for 12.20 on a Thursday lunch but luckily it was a big place so it didn't seem crowded, everything is on different levels which is nice.

The staff were very attentive and got nothing wrong they were very friendly and laid back too which was great!

The food was very very nice, proper Italian (reminded me of food I had in San Gim in Italy).  I had a meat plank to start which was small but had very good meat and cheese on it, Andy had squid and it was the best he's had.
Mains were Very good Andy had meatball carbonara Rome style which was little meatballs and a fresh less heavy sauce which was good, I had Osso Bucco (Veal shin) and polenta, the polenta was quite tasteless but the sauce was amazing with fried capers which tasted even more amazing! the veal was perfect, very soft and full of flavor.  After 2 courses we had enough room for pudding and they made up for small starters, Andy had a very lemony ricotta cheesecake which was sooo rich but good, I had peach and almond tart (frangipane) which is one of my faves and it was huge!!! and Very delicious!

All in all good, but quite slow (we were there 2 hours) and just edging on the expensive side but good none the less.

Moreish - Chandos Road - Redland - Saturday Lunch.

This like all the rest will be from now on a 'We want to go to eat lets see what the list says' moment which was great.

I must admit i find it kinda exciting in a sad way!

OK, so we decided on Moreish as Andy had heard good thing about it too.

The place was not what I was expecting, it had a decking area which would be nice for summer drinks and the inside was small but warm and homely and the staff were really friendly.
The menu is good, it offers brunch and salads/sandwiches but we went for the 2 courses for £11.50 which is a very good price.  I had ribs jacket and coleslaw, Andy had fish and chips.  The only bad thing was my ribs weren't very meaty but the sauce was excellent.  For pudding I had Plum Pain Purdue (stewed plums on french toast) which was delicious and Andy had cheese.

The food was nice however the thing that let it down was it took a long time to come, we were there nearly 2 hours and it wasn't busy.  I didn't feel I was waiting but if you want a quick bite maybe not the place.

The Apple - Welsh Back - Centre - Lunch

Went for a casual Saturday lunch and was very surprised how much I liked it.

The Apple only do ploughman's which compliment the cider perfectly, you can choose from set ones or build your own.
The portions are very generous especially the set ones with lots of bread and biscuits to go with your cheese or ham or whatever!

It was busy on the dockside but we managed to get a table on the boat which was nice, the staff were polite and prompt and dealt with the crazy ordering/queuing system.

Was lovely sitting watching the world go buy with cheese and cider, very lovely indeed.

The Picture House East - Whiteladies Road - Cotham - Lunch

Mum and Dad came up to visit and after the Wellington (first choice for Sunday lunch that day) was full of rugby people we decided on (using the list) on The Picture House East.

I have always wanted to go here since it opened and it was worth the wait.  The venue is nice, and considering it was midday Sunday not too busy (they also have an upstairs), the front of house was very attentive and when we were taking forever to choose from  the menu (small but all tasty) they did not tut/huff at us.  Finally went for Steak Bavette and chips which had the most amazing sauce, rich and complimented the meat perfectly.  Dad had the roast which was lovely too and Andy's thin chips with his fish were the star.  I could have easily have eaten mine twice (not tiny but not massive either).

Was good value too especially if your having more than one course.

Graze Bar and Grill - Queens Square - Centre - Dinner

My turn to take Andy for his Birthday...

I chose Graze, a Bath ales gastro pub and it did not disappoint!

The venue is nice, set out more like a pub than restaurant which is odd as most people were eating but it made it very relaxed which was great.

We both had scallops to start then I had faggots and mash and Andy had steak.  The scallops were lush, perfectly cooked and good size.  My faggots were very rich and delicious and the gravy was excellent, i had to swap my mash for Andy's chips though as it was too smooth for me, but he loved it! His steak was the best steak we have ever tried, it was fantastic, better than the cowshed (and cheaper), it had a sauce which complimented it perfectly!
We squeezed in homemade ice cream for pudding which was out of this world!

Really loved it here and will no doubt return!

The Cowshed - Whiteladies Road - Cotham - Dinner

Andy took me here for my birthday (which is difficult as its the 27th of December) however my like for the place started even before I knew where I was going as Andy said they would not open unless they could get fresh produce...mega brownie point in my book!

Luckily they could so we went! The venue is lovely, really warm and welcoming which big tables and low lighting.  The staff were attentive and friendly and made us feel very welcome.

I had game terrine and steak and Andy had lobster ravioli and steak..you have to have steak he he.  The food was great, perfectly cooked the steak was melt in your mouth and we were so full pudding was no option sadly but we left with a lovely warm feeling!

The only issue is its really (for us) a treat place as it is expensive, which I don't mind as the food is great and well sourced but its not an every day type place.  I want to have a Sunday roast there at some point!!

Kohi Noor - Black Boy Hill - Redland - Dinner

This place is a gem, most probably walk past it and don't know it's there, which to be honest is fine by me as its the best curry in Bristol!

It has very low lighting and every time i have been its been pretty quiet.  The service is prompt and not too in your face if your the only ones in there which is nice.  One thing which is great and you don't really think about is the tables are massive...which makes sense when you have at least 2 dishes each.

The food is nothing like any other Indian ever, it only has a few of the 'normal' dishes with the rest focusing on specials or their region and its all amazing!  You can adjust the spice level, sauciness and ask for specials if you like.  The meat is always perfect, not chewy or tiny and everything else is great too.

Personal faves are Garlic Chilli Chicken and Ghost Gazala (excuse spelling) both spicy but that how i like it!

Inn on the Green - Gloucester Road - Horfield - Lunch/Dinner

This is my favourite haunt in Bristol, its closeish to my house and does my fave things...good food and great beer.

The beer first, they have a massive bar and different real ales and real ciders on all the time (at least 16 in total), they also do the normal drink too but the special stuff is well special!

The food next, its great too, always different and always good.  I have had such a varied amount of food there but the ones that stick are, roast dinners, wood pigeon, steak, burgers and they have all been amazing!

The best thing is, its not an old man pub, you don't feel unwelcome for being under 50 and a girl, every one is there just to soak up the place.  With its recent renovations its even better and has that warm pub feeling!

I will drag everyone visiting us there, its too good not to!

Planet Pizza - Gloucester Road/Whiteladies Road - Dinner/Lunch

The best pizza in Bristol I think (that may change after my adventure)!

Have been far too many times, on lots of different occasions and it has always come out trumps.  The venues are trendy, with often amazing art on the walls which temps as much as the food, and they always smell amazing due to the food.

The pizzas are not traditional but I'm OK with that, I prefer a deeper base to the thin traditional crust, and the toppings are always generous and obviously good quality which makes all the difference.
The salads too are great and not an after thought to the pizzas, my favourite is the artichoke one.

I try to have a different pizza each time but Andy swears by the Mars (all pizzas are named after planets) it is good but I like to mix it up a bit.

Perfect for dinner with friends or relaxed dinners, and great for sharing as they are massive.  The cherry is presented with the bill in the form of jelly beans which provide the perfect amount of sweet (all you can manage) to compliment all the pizza goodness.

The Flyer - Glouscester Road - Horfield - Lunch

The Flyer is a trendy pub, I love going for a drink, its like walking into Alice and Wonderland (well for me anyway), big sofas, lamps, uneven layout, I just really like it!
And...it has really good drinks...oh and food!

Its food is well cooked and simple but very tasty.  Nothing was bad!  We had a sharing platter of lots of things like mini burgers and dips etc, perfect for a lazy Saturday lunch when only the pub will do!

It can get very busy, so I would never go for dinner as it would take you an age to get to the bar to make your order alone!!

The Clifton Sausage - Clifton Village - Dinner

Again somewhere I have been a few times, always great, always consistent, always leave stuffed!!!

The menu is fresh and local when possible and is so tempting your eyes are always bigger than your belly, I have never made it to pudding!

My favourite is the toad in the hole, not only because its my favourite dinner ever but they do it very well!  The sausages are always perfect, the mash soft but not over worked (I HATE smooth mash, it makes me gag) and the gravy is yum.

This place is always busy, you have to book unless your soooo lucky (like my parents recently on a Friday night!!!) but it is worth it, its warm venue and filling food makes you want to curl up and go to sleep.  Great for romantic/special occasions I think.

Fishers - Clifton Village - Dinner

Its been a while but I'm sure this place hasn't changed.
Really nicely set out place with great food, the fish (obviously) is fresh and always cooked perfectly, the Kedgeree which is always on the menu is very good.

The staff are very nice, when Andy and I went last we were umming and ahhing over the oysters...always keen to try new things but not sure if a plate of them is a good idea, we asked the waiter what he thought and instead of trying to sell them to us he went into the kitchen and bought out 2 (1 each) for us to try for free.  Needless to say neither of us were keen but the action has never been forgotten and we were very grateful.

Its service like that that makes you return to places!

Tinto Lounge - Gloucester Road - Horfield - Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

I know the Lounges have spread now but they hold their rustic homely charm and I can't get enough.
We used to live around the corner from this one and it always provided huge temptation, especially for breakfast.  And now we live away we still can't stop going!!

Its always warm and cosy with a great buzz, perfect for a Sunday breakfast or any reason really.  It does get busy but if you time it right its perfect.  The staff are trendy types which adds to the casual nature but the food is always amazing.

Dishes that I can rate (although they change) are the full breakfast, eggy bread and bacon, veg curry, burgers, sandwiches, its all good and fresh - can take a while sometimes but I never mind waiting for good food.

Have a tea if you go, they use proper fruit/flowers and its really yum, the perfect drink for a great meal!

The Burger Kitchen - Cotham Hill - Cotham - Dinner

When this place first opened we were very quick to attend considering Andy works just up the road.  And I must say I was not disappointed!

I was never a fan of GBK (sorry) and this place, although similar in concept, could not be further from it!

Its a great system, there is a board that you order from and you have a number of choices for each aspect of your dinner IE burger, side, toppings, so every burger is different and you get exactly what you want!

The burgers are juicy and massive and the chips are as good as any, they also do take away which we have also used!

Really good place for a quick, good value 'junk food' fix that couldn't feel more healthy if it tried!

Rocotillios - The Triangle - Clifton - Breakfast

As far as I'm aware this is the only place that serves 'American food' in Bristol, and this is why we were there!

After a trip to New York we found ourselves hankering for pancakes for breakfast so out came the phone and we found that Rocotillios did what we were looking for!

It's a very cute little 'diner' with only about 4 booths and the rest is seating round the serving counter which is cool but it means this is not the place for a private meeting.

The service is good and friendly...it would have to be as they are right in front of you!!!  And when the food came we were pleased, fluffy pancakes, bacon and maple syrup...yum!  All was good, however farrrrrrrrr too much syrup for me, it was kinda swimming.  Would have been better if they provided a little pot instead of putting it on for you! But all round a nice breakfast which we left buzzing!

I must say the milkshakes here are amazing too.

Welcome!! Hi!! How Are ya?

Hi

My name is Kat Devine, and I love food.  I especially love food when someone else cooks it.
My hubby Andy and I love going out for dinner and recently I realised we kept going to the same places and to some national chains and I thought NO, what are we doing, Bristol has so much to offer food wise why are we going to the same places???

Hence I created a list of about 80 restaurant's, cafes, gastro pubs etc that I want to eat at in and around the Bristol area.  Some we have eaten at before (our regular places) which will be my first posts then as we go to each place I will post my thoughts etc on them.

I am not a food critic and I'm probably too nice but its just really for my reference, and anyone else who wonders where to eat!

If you fancy coming with me to eat please come along and please feel free to recommend places!

To compliment this growth in eating I will be working out harder...grr...I already cycle to work 10 miles a day and do Roller Derby 4 - 6 hours a week but I will now be adding in running too!

See ya!!

Kat xxxx
